How we read your speed

Internet plans are sold by a single download number, but that number only matters in the context of what you do online. This interpreter takes your download speed and compares it against the real bandwidth each common activity needs, then tells you in plain language what your connection can run — and how many things it can run at the same time. The thresholds it uses come straight from the FCC Broadband Speed Guide and streaming providers’ published recommendations.

The bands are simple: under 5 Mbps is basic — email, browsing and one SD video. 5 to 25 Mbps covers a single HD (1080p) stream and a video call. 25 to 100 Mbps runs multiple HD streams or one 4K stream comfortably. 100 to 300 Mbps handles several 4K streams plus big downloads, and 300 Mbps and up is built for a heavy, device-packed household. Because each 4K stream needs roughly 25 Mbps, a quick rule of thumb is that the number of simultaneous 4K streams you can run is floor(your Mbps ÷ 25) — which is exactly what the tool calculates for you.

Mbps vs MBps — the eight-times difference

The single most common confusion about internet speed is the difference between Mbps and MBps. Internet speed is advertised in megabits per second (lowercase b: Mbps). File sizes and download speeds, though, are usually shown in megabytes per second (capital B: MBps). There are eight bits in a byte, so to convert your plan speed into the fastest possible download rate, you divide by eight. A 100 Mbps connection therefore tops out at about 12.5 MB per second — which is why a 1 GB game download takes a minute or two rather than seconds, even on a fast line. Why upload speed matters (and often doesn’t get advertised)

Most plans give you a big download number and a much smaller upload number, because most home use is downloading — streaming, browsing, loading pages. But anything you send depends on upload: video calls, posting photos and videos, cloud backups, online gaming and screen sharing. A single HD video call needs roughly 3 to 4 Mbps in both directions, so when several family members are on calls at once, a thin upload pipe becomes the bottleneck even if download looks generous. Ping, latency and why gamers care

Speed is not just about volume; it is also about responsiveness. Ping (also called latency) measures the round-trip delay in milliseconds between your device and a server. It barely affects streaming a film, but it is critical for online gaming, video calls and anything interactive. Under 50 ms feels instant and is ideal for competitive gaming. Between 50 and 100 ms is fine for most games and calls. Above 100 ms you start to notice lag — delayed shots, talking over each other on calls. Buying a faster plan won’t fix a weak signal. If your speed test is fine right next to the router but poor across the house, the problem is coverage, not your plan. Frequently asked questions

Is 100 Mbps a good internet speed?

For most households, yes. 100 Mbps comfortably handles a 4K stream plus several HD streams, video calls and general browsing at the same time. It supports roughly four simultaneous 4K Netflix streams (about 25 Mbps each) and leaves room for downloads. A larger household with many heavy users at once may prefer 300 Mbps or more.

How many Mbps do I need for 4K streaming?

Netflix recommends about 15 to 25 Mbps for a single Ultra HD (4K) stream, and 5 Mbps for HD. As a safe planning figure, allow roughly 25 Mbps per simultaneous 4K stream. So 50 Mbps covers two 4K streams, and 100 Mbps covers about four, assuming little else is using the connection at the same time.

What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?

Mbps means megabits per second and is how internet speed is advertised. MBps (with a capital B) means megabytes per second and is how file sizes and download speeds are usually shown. There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide Mbps by 8 to get the maximum download rate in megabytes per second. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MBps at best.
